WHAT WE TREAT

The Anna Guthrie Osteopathic Clinic

Osteopathy

Osteopaths treat babies to the elderly using gentle hands-on therapy. Osteopathy recognises that a lot of pain and disability suffered stems from abnormalities in our body’s structure and function. As osteopaths, we treat musculoskeletal pain by balancing tissues and normalising function which then helps the body to heal.

Osteopathy was developed in 1874 by physician Andrew Taylor Still; the practise uses a variety of non-invasive, drug-free therapies. Using the appropriate treatment for the patient which may vary from person to person focus on soft tissue massage, stretching, joint mobilisation and manipulation techniques. The skill of the osteopath is that we can feel strain in the tissues using our hands then normalise the function and therefore the pain.

Osteopathy is the first complementary therapy to be recognised in the UK giving new protection to patients. On the 1st July 1993 The Osteopaths Bill became law and osteopathy in the United Kingdom is now recognised as a medical treatment.

For the millions of people that visit an osteopath each year, legislation means that they will now have the same legal protection as they receive when consulting a doctor or dentist. Osteopaths are all regulated by the General Osteopathic Council.
